Slips and falls aren't just embarrassing—they can be dangerous and costly. Yet so many homeowners choose gorgeous tile based purely on looks, only to discover the hard way that beauty doesn't equal safety when water hits the floor.

In this deep dive on slip resistance, Mike and Abby break down everything you need to know about keeping your footing while maintaining stunning style. We decode those mysterious ratings like DCOF and R-values that actually tell you how safe a tile will be when wet. Forget the marketing hype—we give you the straight talk on what these numbers mean for your bathroom, kitchen, or pool deck.

The age-old design rule of "matte for floors, gloss for walls" exists for good reason, but we go beyond simple finishes to explore how texture creates both visual interest and crucial traction. From the practical benefits of mosaic tiles (more grout lines = more grip) to the maintenance considerations of textured surfaces, we cover the real-world implications of every choice.

Best of all, we share designer-approved combinations that prove safety doesn't mean sacrificing style. Learn how to create visually striking spaces that perform beautifully in daily life—whether that means handling kitchen spills, bathroom splashes, or poolside puddles. With our practical tips for testing and selecting tile, you'll approach your next renovation with confidence.

Here's your host, Mike Belk.

00:00:43.801 --> 00:00:45.564
All right, welcome back to Belk Tile Talk.

00:00:45.564 --> 00:00:48.030
I'm Mike Belk and, as always, I've got Abby here with me.

00:00:48.430 --> 00:00:49.313
Good morning everyone.

00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:54.723
Today we're going deep on something folks don't always think about until it's too late slip resistance in tile.

00:00:54.723 --> 00:01:00.265
You wouldn't believe how many calls I get from people who learn the hard way that pretty tile isn't always safe tile.

00:01:00.887 --> 00:01:07.103
It happens way more than you'd think, mike, and it's not just bathrooms and showers, though those are the obvious spots.

00:01:07.103 --> 00:01:13.349
Kitchens Think about all the splashy chaos in a busy family kitchen, or all those spills near the stove.

00:01:13.349 --> 00:01:16.352
And then there's outdoor patios and pool decks.

00:01:16.352 --> 00:01:26.563
Slip resistance is crucial in any space that's likely to get wet wet Absolutely and let's make this simple Slip resistance.

00:01:26.582 --> 00:01:40.787
Technically, that's measured using things like COF ratings, coefficient of friction, right or sometimes you'll hear about R values, especially if you're looking at tile from Europe COF, dcof, r9, r10, they're all ways of rating how slippery or not your tiles are when they get wet or greasy.

00:01:41.370 --> 00:01:42.090
And that's the thing.

00:01:42.090 --> 00:01:44.046
Not all slip ratings are created equal.

00:01:44.046 --> 00:01:49.191
Dcof, that's dynamic coefficient of friction, is the big one in North America.

00:01:49.191 --> 00:01:54.628
Basically it's a fancy lab test where they see how easy it is to slide something across the tile when it's wet.

00:01:54.628 --> 00:02:00.968
Above 0.42 in those tests pretty good for most wet indoor areas, patios or pool decks.

00:02:00.968 --> 00:02:02.010
You want even higher?

00:02:02.811 --> 00:02:03.433
R values.

00:02:03.433 --> 00:02:06.600
Now, quick primer there.

00:02:06.600 --> 00:02:07.543
They run from R9 up through R13.

00:02:07.543 --> 00:02:08.967
R9 is well not much grip.

00:02:08.967 --> 00:02:15.752
That's your smooth, glossy stuff you see in living rooms, maybe bedrooms, when you start talking, bathrooms or kitchens, especially with water and grease.

00:02:15.752 --> 00:02:23.965
You want R10 or above Pool decks, changing areas, r12, r13 territory anything with real potential for slips and falls.

00:02:24.627 --> 00:02:28.286
And I hear this all the time but I picked a matte tile so I thought I was good.

00:02:28.286 --> 00:02:29.528
Nope, that's a myth.

00:02:29.528 --> 00:02:35.330
Not every matte tile is automatically safe, just like not all glossy tiles are a guaranteed fall hazard.

00:02:35.330 --> 00:02:40.816
You gotta look at the actual slip rating and honestly think about how the space gets used day to day.

00:02:41.397 --> 00:02:46.544
Oh for sure that reminds me I had a client who chose these really beautiful high gloss tiles for their kitchen.

00:02:46.544 --> 00:02:51.984
Love the look, but after a couple spaghetti sauce mishaps and wet shoes, regret city.

00:02:51.984 --> 00:02:55.270
They ended up putting down mats everywhere, just to be safe.

00:02:55.270 --> 00:02:59.343
It taught me check the specs first, not just the showroom shine.

00:03:00.085 --> 00:03:03.007
Exactly, and don't be fooled by marketing buzzwords either.

00:03:03.007 --> 00:03:07.871
Ask for the slip test results and make sure the rating matches how you'll use the space.

00:03:07.871 --> 00:03:13.213
Let's dig into finishes, because that's usually where people get tripped up, literally and figuratively.

00:03:13.213 --> 00:03:16.796
So let's talk finishes Gloss versus matte.

00:03:16.796 --> 00:03:23.161
Glossy tiles gorgeous, they bounce light, they look upscale and in the right space they absolutely make a room shine.

00:03:23.161 --> 00:03:26.146
But put that same glossy tile on a bathroom floor.

00:03:26.146 --> 00:03:29.016
Recipe for well needing a band-aid.

00:03:29.579 --> 00:03:30.001
Yeah, I mean.

00:03:30.001 --> 00:03:35.484
I've always said glossy finishes are best for walls or spots that don't see a lot of puddles or cooking splatter.

00:03:35.484 --> 00:03:43.590
They show every footprint water spot and, honestly, they're slick when anything wet hits them, but on the wall looks fantastic, super elegant.

00:03:43.590 --> 00:03:45.893
It's about putting the right finish in the right place.

00:03:46.473 --> 00:03:47.776
That's the sweet spot Now.

00:03:47.776 --> 00:03:54.477
Matte finishes more understated, I guess, less glare, hides smudges and imperfections and usually offers a little more grip.

00:03:54.477 --> 00:03:58.915
Great for floors, bathrooms, kitchens, really any high-traffic messy zone.

00:03:59.544 --> 00:04:01.911
Matte tiles for floors, gloss for walls.

00:04:01.911 --> 00:04:04.677
It's kind of an old-school rule but it works for a reason.

00:04:04.677 --> 00:04:07.772
A matte floor is forgiving Spills, crumbs, a little water.

00:04:07.772 --> 00:04:08.735
Nobody will even notice.

00:04:08.735 --> 00:04:15.270
Only downside, sometimes, with the wrong lighting, it can look a bit flat or dull and some folks want more drama in the design.

00:04:15.771 --> 00:04:18.586
Right and you can totally mix them for the best of both.

00:04:18.586 --> 00:04:23.218
I love, love a matte on the floor, gloss on the wall combo for bathroom renos.

00:04:23.218 --> 00:04:30.762
It's safe, it looks balanced and you can use lighting or a bold accent color to keep the whole room from feeling too muted.

00:04:30.762 --> 00:04:37.072
Saw that trend everywhere when we talked about shower floors a few episodes ago, and it's still holding strong.

00:04:37.625 --> 00:04:43.487
Best part, you get all the visual depth up high like a glimmering wall tile without risking a wipeout when you hop out of the shower.

00:04:43.487 --> 00:04:48.733
Let's dig in a bit more, though, because finish isn't the only thing that helps with grip Texture.

00:04:48.733 --> 00:04:55.620
That's where things get interesting, yeah, so if you want to up your safety game without giving up on style, start looking at texture.

00:04:55.620 --> 00:04:58.985
It's more than just a look.

00:04:58.985 --> 00:04:59.827
It's how the tile feels under your feet.

00:04:59.827 --> 00:05:07.923
Think of those stone-look tiles with the little ridges or bumps, or the wood-look tiles with the little ridges or bumps, or the wood look tiles with that grain you can actually feel.

00:05:10.605 --> 00:05:12.833
And don't forget mosaics Smaller tiles mean more grout lines, and more grout lines mean more traction.

00:05:12.833 --> 00:05:18.452
That's why, as we talked about a while back in our shower floors episode, mosaics are such a hit, especially on the shower pan.

00:05:18.452 --> 00:05:21.528
Bonus points if you're into that pebble mosaic, look.

00:05:21.528 --> 00:05:24.298
It's comfy and surprisingly secure underfoot.

00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:29.589
I will say, though it's a bit of a tradeoff the more texture you've got, the more spots for dirt to collect.

00:05:29.589 --> 00:05:30.742
Soap, scum, grime.

00:05:30.742 --> 00:05:32.750
All that stuff loves to settle in every nook.

00:05:32.750 --> 00:05:40.548
If you go for those chunky super textured tiles around a pool or in a shower, be ready for a little extra cleaning to keep things neat.

00:05:41.029 --> 00:05:41.430
Totally.

00:05:41.430 --> 00:05:45.725
One of my favorite looks is a matte, textured porcelain tile for pool surrounds.

00:05:45.725 --> 00:05:50.793
It handles splashes, it's less slippery and it can look like real stone or wood.

00:05:50.793 --> 00:05:59.004
Just you know, plan for a little more TLC with the scrub brush.

00:05:59.004 --> 00:06:00.529
But textural contrast also adds so much visual interest.

00:06:00.529 --> 00:06:02.495
Floors, accent walls, even little shower niches.

00:06:02.495 --> 00:06:06.992
When you combine smooth and rough textures you get depth, warmth and lots of character.

00:06:07.555 --> 00:06:07.916
Agreed.

00:06:07.916 --> 00:06:10.002
There's nothing wrong with a good cleaning day anyway.

00:06:10.002 --> 00:06:19.526
But like you said, Abby, it's balancing what you can maintain with the safety and the look, which is kind of the whole design challenge right, Making spaces beautiful and functional at the same time.

00:06:20.007 --> 00:06:21.875
Designers are all about that balance.

00:06:21.875 --> 00:06:26.728
Nobody wants their home to look like a locker room, but nobody wants a trip to urgent care either.

00:06:26.728 --> 00:06:32.024
The good news is pairing different finishes and textures gets you the best of both worlds.

00:06:32.024 --> 00:06:39.588
Think big, glossy marble, look tiles climbing up your shower wall, paired with slip resistant matte tiles on the floor.

00:06:39.588 --> 00:06:42.180
It's instantly stunning and you keep your footing.

00:06:42.963 --> 00:06:43.567
Love that look.

00:06:43.567 --> 00:06:52.430
Another thing I've been seeing people using textured mosaics just inside the shower niche for an accent but then sticking to a smoother tile everywhere else to make cleaning less of a chore.

00:06:52.430 --> 00:06:55.384
Adds visual pop but keeps maintenance in check.

00:06:55.966 --> 00:06:56.468
Definitely.

00:06:56.468 --> 00:07:04.781
And there's a new trend catching fire combining gloss and matte in one room, not just for looks, but to actually show that you can have style and safety side by side.

00:07:04.781 --> 00:07:09.047
You can even find tiles now where the finish changes across the surface.

00:07:09.047 --> 00:07:13.894
That way, designers play with light and grip in the same space, which is pretty neat.

00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:18.971
I like that because for so long people thought picking safe tiles meant giving up good design.

00:07:18.971 --> 00:07:20.326
Not true at all anymore.

00:07:20.326 --> 00:07:28.170
With the right balance, you can build a wow factor space that's also family-friendly or ready for wild pool parties or whatever you throw at it really.

00:07:28.641 --> 00:07:29.564
That's the big win.

00:07:29.564 --> 00:07:34.841
You don't have to sacrifice beauty for safety.

00:07:34.841 --> 00:07:39.500
There are smart ways to mix finishes, textures and even grout shades to make something that feels high-end and performs in real life.

00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:46.384
Before we wrap, let's talk about how folks listening can make the smartest, safest choices for their projects.

00:07:46.384 --> 00:07:48.151
All right, practical tips.

00:07:48.151 --> 00:07:52.444
You got to check the COF rating or R value before handing over your credit card?

00:07:52.444 --> 00:07:57.324
Seriously, if you're shopping and the tile doesn't show a slip resistance rating, ask.

00:07:57.324 --> 00:08:04.449
And if you're aiming for wet areas, like a bathroom, kitchen or patio, hunt for slip resistant or wet area tiles.

00:08:04.449 --> 00:08:09.221
Sometimes porcelain options are designed specifically for this and they're awesome.

00:08:09.821 --> 00:08:12.583
And don't be afraid to get hands-on at the store If in doubt.

00:08:12.583 --> 00:08:13.882
Ask to see a sample.

00:08:13.882 --> 00:08:18.305
And here's a little trick Drop a bit of water on it and rub your hand or shoe over it.

00:08:18.305 --> 00:08:20.266
You'll get a feel for how grippy it really is.

00:08:20.266 --> 00:08:24.468
Not super scientific, but it can tell you a lot right there in real life.

00:08:24.629 --> 00:08:30.591
Use rugs or mats if you've already got a spot that gets slick, like near the sink, the back door or the shower entrance.

00:08:30.591 --> 00:08:33.413
Pro tip pick a darker grout for busy areas.

00:08:33.413 --> 00:08:38.196
It'll help hide stains, dirt, all that day-to-day mess that white grout just can't forgive.

00:08:38.836 --> 00:08:42.138
If you go with natural stone or something heavily textured, always seal it.

00:08:42.138 --> 00:08:48.803
Water, oils and gunk can get into unsealed tile and grout and cause headaches down the road.

00:08:48.803 --> 00:08:50.245
Better to protect it up front than try to fix problems later.

00:08:50.267 --> 00:08:53.091
And don't forget there's no such thing as slip-proof tile.

00:08:53.091 --> 00:08:55.844
Maintenance is a big part of keeping your space safe.

00:08:55.844 --> 00:09:05.701
Keep up on cleaning, use area rugs responsibly and don't hesitate to ask your supplier for the best options for your project, especially if you're a DIYer or running your first reno.

00:09:06.222 --> 00:09:11.591
That's it Design with safety in mind from the jump and you can have beautiful spaces without the uh-oh moments.

00:09:11.591 --> 00:09:14.561
Before we sign off, abby want to let listeners know what's coming up.
