With back to school, it has been a little quiet in the showroom, so able to look at some new lines and products. Yes, it is nice to have a little breather and get caught up. Yes, well, today we're getting into the terracotta territory. Huh Abby. Absolutely, mike, and honestly, terracottas just got this. I don't know. There's something about the warmth of those earthy tones that makes any space feel instantly inviting and timeless too. Yeah, you know I always say terracotta connects you right back to well, history. Honestly, the word itself literally means baked earth. You know it dates all the way back to ancient times. There's this Mediterranean vibe to it but it's stuck around in American design for a reason, that character, it's kind of universal.

1:30 It totally is my first client project as a solo designer oof years back. I remember walking into this let's be honest outdated kitchen. The bones were good but it was all sterile. We did handmade terracotta tiles just as a backsplash Nothing wild. But the second they went up, the whole room just came alive. It suddenly felt like a rustic European kitchen Warm not intimidating. Still one of my favorite before and afters by far. That's the magic of it. And like we just had an episode about brown tiles right, there's overlap for sure. But terracotta has got this extra authenticity and unpredictability. The color variation, the texture, it's never one note, and whether it's a farmhouse kitchen or a modern loft, it just fits.

2:15 Exactly. It softens up sharp corners too, makes even slick modern spaces a little cozier. And you know, people really respond to that handmade earthy story, especially now when everyone wants their home to feel more personal and grounded. All right, so let's get practical. Where are people actually using terracotta? It's not just floors, now right? Definitely not. You're seeing terracotta show up everywhere backsplashes in kitchens for that touch of rustic charm, showers, yes, really, and of floors and hallways and living rooms. But each space comes with its own quirks, especially when it comes to things like water. Bathrooms get tricky right. The big pro in a kitchen is that terracotta is tough, super durable for day-to-day foot traffic or messes around the stove.

2:57 But if you're putting it in a shower, the whole water resistance thing really matters. If you don't seal the tiles properly, you're asking for mold stains or worse. Yeah, that's the number one mistake. I see Folks using terracotta in wet zones like showers and thinking it's a set it and forget it situation. Nope, you gotta prep, seal and then reseal and the install is a little different for, say, a backsplash compared to a shower. Pan. Backsplashes you can get creative open shelving, even run the tile up to the ceiling, but showers need pro-level waterproofing. And don't get me started on grout haze, mike I. 3:38 And don't get me started on grout haze, mike. I see so many DIYers try to rush the cleanup and sigh. The tile ends up looking dull. It messes with those gorgeous color variations that terracotta is known for. Take your time, folks, Absolutely. You know we had a customer at Belk Tile just last month. I love this story. They wanted a real statement kitchen backsplash, something vibrant. They picked these handmade terracotta tiles with just wild natural color swings. Once installed in a sort of staggered brick pattern, the play of light and shadow was incredible. It changed all day long. People are really gravitating toward those imperfections and uniqueness, even in new builds. All right, so let's say you've gone all in on terracotta. What does it really take to keep it looking good for years? Because it can be a little high maintenance compared to something like glazed porcelain. Yeah, and I've learned the hard way that regular sealing is not optional.

4:19 There are a few types. Penetrating sealers are probably best if you want to keep that natural matte look, but surface sealers will give you a glossier finish and can amp up the color Either way. First make sure everything's squeaky clean before you seal. Dust, grout, haze, all that jazz. And don't cheap out on your cleaners. A pH-neutral cleaner is your friend, skip the vinegar or anything acidic. I had a customer once this is back in the Belk Tile showroom. They put in a stunning terracotta shower wall but used the wrong grout Not color fast and way too gritty. At first it dulled the tile but with some creativity we actually turned it into a feature. We ended up doing a partial buff with a mild abrasive pad, sealed it and honestly it gave this old world texture.

5:02 The homeowner absolutely loved. That's honestly so true. Sometimes a mistake becomes an artistic detail right In my own bathroom at home which sees, let's just say, a lot of muddy kid footprints. I reseal it about every two years and I stick to mats by the sink and tub to protect the tile. Plus, I open windows after showers to keep moisture in check. Nothing fancy, just regular attention. It's all about a little bit of extra care An immediate spot cleaning, spills or stains. Dab them up, don't let them set, and if you stay on top of it, terracotta just gets better with age. Honestly, sort of that lived-in Mediterranean thing we all love. So, Mike design trends, terracotta is having a big moment right, Not just in country homes, but in modern and even minimalist spaces too.

You see a lot of designers pairing terracotta with crisp whites, sleek metals or even bold color pops bright blue cabinets, emerald green, you name it and those warm tiles become the centerpiece or a subtle ground for the rest of the room. I'm loving the look of mixed shapes like hexagons, with classic rectangles or even custom mosaics. Yeah, and size is everything. Big oversized tiles can really open up a small hallway, but if you want like a cozy vintage vibe, go for small format squares or bricks in a herringbone or chevron pattern. It's all over those dreamy European bathrooms we scroll on Instagram. Don't be afraid to experiment with textures too Matte, handmade, glazed, even pairing different finishes for interest, without overwhelming the senses.

6:30 And it's not just about the tile itself. You can elevate the look even further by mixing materials. Pair it with rustic wood, matte black fixtures or brushed brass for a modern twist, or introduce glass shower panels or stone countertops to balance out that earthiness. That way you get warmth with some modern refinement. If you want to make your space truly one-of-a-kind, mix up the installation. There's so much opportunity for creative play if you're not afraid to go a little off-script. And honestly, I find clients get most excited about those let's-try-it moments. Totally.
